Difference between Ordinary Laser Marking and Diode laser Marking

Both Ordinary Laser Marking and Diode laser Marking technologies are used in different kind of applications and have their own advantages and disadvantages which are mentioned below:

Ordinary Laser Marking:

Ordinary laser marking involves the use of gas discharge lamp for laser pumping. These lamps can be arc lamps or flash lamps This method typically includes a glass tube filled with gas and having metal electrodes at each end, which generates short bursts of intense white light.

Advantages :

  • Very high pump powers (peak power) can be generated.
  • Higher beam quality
  • If we calculate Price per watt of generated pump power it is much lesser for lamp than diode
  • Lamps are robust, can survive to current or voltage spikes
  • These systems are stable, easy to install and cost effective

Disadvantages:

  • Not efficient- lamps are unable to convert electricity into pump light and produce a lot of heat
  • requires water cooling to control heat
  • require multi kilowatt power supply
  • Lamps have very less lifetime- some hundred to few thousand hours
  • High voltages are a necessity for lamp pumped lasers which presents additional safety issues
  • low lamp brightness
  • lamps are noisy pump sources generating higher laser noise.

Diode laser Marking

Diode laser pumping uses laser diodes for pumping. Generally, diode-pumped lasers are solid state lasers. In these systems it is possible to use fiber coupled diode lasers which make it possible to separate actual laser head from another package containing pump diodes, making laser head very compact.

Advantages:

  • Diodes convert much of electrical energy into laser light hence wall plug efficiency( total electrical power to optical power efficiency) is much greater
  • Generate very little heat so no need of water cooling
  • Operate with low voltage power supply
  • The diodes have a lifetime of more than 50,000-80,000 hours
  • semiconductor diodes come in a very compact size hence size of laser head is decreased
  • Diode laser machines price in India are very low.

Disadvantages:

  • Diodes can be damaged by fluctuating power supply.
  • The laser beam has large divergence.
  • Requires temperature controlled environment for effective operation
  • Over the time diodes start using increasing amounts of power with a decrease in efficiency.
  • The lens is required for beam correction which makes the system fragile. Damage to these lens leaves system non-functional.

Even though diode laser marking is becoming popular and used more widely these days, ordinary laser marking is still used in some industries and still have long way to go because of its unique features.
